ABSTRACTIn this paper, Crush force efficiency (CFE), Specific Energy Absorption (SEA), Energy Absorption per Crush Length (Ecl), Maximum and average crush forces of straight and grooved tapered thin-walled tubes with various cross-section shapes (circle, ellipse, square, rectangle, hexagon, and octagon) have been studied. The effects of taper, the groove (as initiator) and their interaction have been presented in the current study using Finite Element Method as a numerical method. The tubes have the same volume, height, average cross-section area, thickness and material and have been subjected to axial and oblique dynamic loading. The results of simulations show that the section's geometry, taper and groove addition have a significant effect on energy absorption behavior and the hexagon cross section have better energy absorption behavior compared with other considered geometries. On the other hand, it was found that the behavior of these structures could improve against dynamic axial and oblique impact loading with the cost-effective geometry modifications. These results could help to improve and choose appropriate energy absorber structure based on desirable crush force and energy absorbing characteristics. 相似文献

This paper deals with modeling of the phenomenon of fretting fatigue in
heterogeneous materials using the multi-scale computational homogenization technique
and finite element analysis (FEA). The heterogeneous material for the specimens consists
of a single hole model (25% void/cell, 16% void/cell and 10% void/cell) and a four-hole
model (25% void/cell). Using a representative volume element (RVE), we try to produce
the equivalent homogenized properties and work on a homogeneous specimen for the
study of fretting fatigue. Next, the fretting fatigue contact problem is performed for 3 new
cases of models that consist of a homogeneous and a heterogeneous part (single hole cell)
in the contact area. The aim is to analyze the normal and shear stresses of these models
and compare them with the results of the corresponding heterogeneous models based on
the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) method. Finally, by comparing the
computational time and % deviations, we draw conclusions about the reliability and

Geometries of ceramic parts for high-temperature sealing have great influence on their compression-resilience behaviors. In this work, an accurate and large-scale artificial neural network (ANN) was established to match the relationship between structural parameters and mechanical properties of ZrO2 parts fabricated by 3D printing. Four geometry parameters of the designed ZrO2 parts were imported as input and apparent Young's modulus and maximum deformation simulated by finite element method (FEM) were imported as output. FEM calculation provided 400 groups of data for the training of ANN, which greatly improved the predicted accuracy of the network. The predicted results show the mechanical performance of the parts with a range of modulus from 9.24 × 10−3 GPa to 100.35 × 10−3 GPa and a range of maximum deformation from 2.32% to 5.80% can be forecasted with error less than 8%. Based on the optimized structural parameters, the designed ZrO2 parts were fabricated by Direct Ink Writing (DIW) technique. The experimental compression-rebound property is comparable to that of ANN prediction. It demonstrates that the combined method of ANN and FEM is a preferable way to optimize the structure and guide the fabrication of complex ceramic parts by 3D printing method. 相似文献

A recently reported Lyapunov based criterion (Singh (2014) [7]) for the asymptotic stability of two-dimensional (2-D) linear discrete systems described by the Fornasini–Marchesini second local state-space (FMSLSS) model is reviewed. A representative elementary volume (REV) in epoxy syntactic foams was generated to incorporate randomly distributed glass microballoons that followed a log-normal size distribution. Finite element modelling of the REV foam was developed and experimentally validated to investigate the elastic behaviour and failure mechanism in the foams with different microballoon volume fractions (V). The localised stresses concentrate in various zones within the foam, and can cause the vertical splitting fracture of microballoons and the micro-crack formation in the matrix. Dependent on the microballoon volume fraction, micro-cracks can propagate to join adjacent micro-cracks and voids left by fractured microballoons, and finally develop into a macro-crack either in the preferred longitudinal (for low V) or diagonal (for high V) directions. This is consistent with the macroscopic observations of the fracture process in the foam specimens.
